Although Sulawesi contains 17 active volcanos, Sulawesi Toraja is coffee grown in the Torajaland in the Southwest section of the big island in the Peganunan Quarles and Rante Karua ranges of extinct volcanos. The Torajan people are decendants of Indochinese oceanic traders who braved mighty seas (in very small boats) to settle these Sulawesi highlands and take up agriculture. Torajans build distinctive houses that look very much like their boats, built totally with lash and dowels not to mention actual decorative ship prows on their rooflines. Unique craftsmanship and elaborate attention to detail are qualities very evident with the Torajan people. These admirable characteristics reflect themselves in the exceptional dedication and expertise involved in the cultivation of their coffee plants. Like the coffees of Sumatra, consistency can be across the board with these coffees due to different ways of processing done by the natives. Rigorous cupping has resulted in this outstanding and very prized lot of Volcano's Sulawesi. Expect a myriad of flavors most appreciated by those who are drawn to the "acquired taste" of a Sulawesi. With this coffee you'll find a complex blend of spicy, earthy and woody flavors.
