Choosing wines and pairing wine with food and regional varietals have been covered by other noted wine connoisseurs, and this work doesn't cover new territory in that respect. Singh, a 29-year-old master sommelier and host of a PBS restaurant show, attempts to demystify the process of wine selection from a female perspective, drawing parallels to dating and relationships as well as to proclamations about male and female differences in wine preferences. She wants to shatter the myth that wine selection belongs in the male domain, yet she seems to stereotype women. Basing her youthful observations on her experiences as the director of wine and spirits in a Chicago restaurant, she declares that women like white and men prefer red. Men choose full-bodied, hearty wines, while women want light and fruity. It may be that her observations have some merit, and perhaps some women will recognize themselves in this book, particularly thirtysomething wine novices.
